Abstract This article focuses on the historical aspects of the development of tourism science and education in the USSR, and Russia as its legal successor. The specific features of their formation and organization in the second half of the twentieth century are examined, because they had a strong influence over the modern status of the country’s tourism and recreation and development trends in the beginning of the twenty-first century. Scientific generalizations made in the article are based on a large amount of factual data analysis and original literary sources, and are followed by a number of concrete examples.
